About India

The Indian Peninsula is part of the continent of Asia, bordered by water on three sides (Arabian Sea, Bay of Bengal and Indian Ocean) and the world's highest mountain range, the Himalaya, on the other side. India covers an area of 3,287,263 km2 with distinct geographical features, extending from the snow‐covered Himalayan peaks on the north, and deserts on the west to the tropical rain forests on the south. India is one of the oldest and greatest civilizations in the world, dating back to the civilization of the Indus River about 5,000 years ago. India is a very diversified country (culture, tribes, religion, philosophy, cuisine, faiths, art, literature and music) which travelers can experience journeys from one state to another. India has 15 official languages with over 300 minor languages and 3,000 dialects. The widely spoken language is Hindi. It has no official religion, but more than 80% of Indians are Hindu. All the world's major religions are established in India. Nowhere on Earth does a country present itself in such a dizzying, creative burst of diversification, and it is impossible not to be astonished. Perhaps the only thing more difficult for travelers to describe or understand India completely.

Climate

India's climate varies from the tropical monsoon (in the south) to the moderate climate (in the north). Generally, from November to mid‐March, the weather for most parts of the country is cold, from April to June the weather is warm and sunny, and monsoon rains start from June to September. The climate in India varies significantly from region to region. Basically, India can be divided into four weather zones; Northern India, Southern India, Eastern India and Western India. Northern India: this zone is the most climatically diverse one. In the mountain regions (Shimla, Manali), temperatures can drop to 0 0C in winter months with heavy rainfall. However, temperatures can be increased to 50 0C in the other regions (Dras, Alwar). Southern India: this zone has tropical weather conditions throughout the year when the weather is more pleasant from November to March and hot in the summer. The temperature lies between 22 0C to 30 0C throughout the year. The rainy season falls from June to September. Eastern India: this zone lies in the subtropical zone. Generally, this zone has more extreme and drier weather conditions during summer and winter, and gets sustainable rainfall during the monsoon months. Western India: this zone has a coastal climate due to the Arabian Sea and the Gulf of Kutch. Generally, this zone gets rain from July to September and the weather becomes pleasant from October onwards.
