About Sri Lanka

Ancient Greek geographers called it “Taprobane”, Arabs Called it “Serendib”, later European mapmakers called it “Ceylon”, it's all about an island lying in the Indian Ocean. Now it is called Sri Lanka. Sri Lanka is multi ethnic country, majority is Buddhists, where Dharma of Lord Buddha practise all around island. Peaceful surroundings, smiling faces, good‐hearted natives, greater hospitality you can't get anywhere from the world. It's the place you haven't been yet, that you should. Sri Lanka is relatively a small isle (area of 65,610 km2), but you can do a lot in a short. Country blessed with 1340km long coastal line with golden beachfronts, 8 UNESCO world heritage sites, national parks, cascading waterfalls, tropical rainforests, picturesque highlands, rivers, different climate and cultures, all you can experience within few hours of travel. Probably this is the reason travelers like most and called Sri Lanka as Wonder Of Asia!

Agriculture plays a major role in the Sri Lankan economy. Sri Lanka has been inhabited for around 125,000 years prior to the birth of Jesus Christ. The island boasts a documented history along with a vibrant culture. Its recorded history commenced with the advent of Buddhism, which sparked a cultural transformation over 2,000 years ago. This movement shaped lifestyles and inspired the creation of the construction of dagabas, temples, monasteries, statues, and giant man‐made reservoirs and irrigation networks. The Anuradhapura and Polonnaruwa eras signify the most crucial historical and cultural milestones for Sri Lanka. By the 13th century, a sophisticated irrigation system was implemented to support agricultural activities.

Culture

Sri Lankan culture is diverse, as it varies from region to region. This uniqueness plays a vital role in shaping the Sri Lankan identity. As a multicultural society, the predominant religion is Buddhism, with over 70% of the population identifying as Buddhist. The remainder follows Hinduism, Islam, or Christianity. Religion deeply influences various aspects of life, serving as a fundamental element of the country's diversity.

The cultural norms are filled with numerous customs and rituals passed down through generations. In this country, it is not surprising to find a very intense level of diversity, both cultural and festive events. This is one of the main reasons for large tourist attractions. Sri Lanka boasts a rich artistic heritage, encompassing fine arts such as music, dance, visual arts, architecture, sculptures, and even its culinary traditions. Additionally, the country's history of colonization by the Portuguese, Dutch, and British has left notable influences. Hospitality is also one of the prominent characteristics of the Sri Lankan culture.

Climate

Sri Lanka is a tropical country, so it has a tropical climate. Island is a year round destination for vacationers. If one part of the island is limed due to bad weather, other part is likely to having good weather condition. Weather around country is affected by two monsoon seasons, which are Southwest season (May‒September) and Northeast season (December‒February). Normally central highlands have a mixed weather. North and East coasts good in May to September, South and West coasts good in December to mid of April and it is considered as the peak season in Sri Lanka tourism. Average temperature usually varies 28‒32 0C in the coastal areas and 16‒20 0C in the central highlands. Normally country has a high humidity, average of 80% year round. Since weather cannot be predicted best to take rain wear any time of the year. All visitors to central highlands should take warm wears.

Food

Almost every household in Sri Lanka considers rice and curry as their primary meal. In Sri Lanka, various methods exist for cooking rice, including rice gruel, milk rice, tempered rice, ambul bath (rice), sweet rice with honey, rice with ghee, and rice infused with spices. Historically, kings offered milk rice to Buddhist priests, and even today it is a meal with high cultural value.

Sri Lankans particularly favour vegetables and fruits in their meals. Sri Lankan curries come in many varieties, with a wide range of colours and flavours. Some of the most renowned curries are dhal, fish, potato, dried fish, chicken, aubergine, and pumpkin, all of which complement rice perfectly. Also, Sri Lankans prefer to add achcharu and coconut sambal to their meals. Apart from the main meals, their culinary interests extend to coconut roti, hoppers, string hoppers, koththu roti, pittu, egg roti and dosa. Moreover, during the New Year season, Sri Lankans particularly relish sweet treats such as uduwel, aluwa, mun keum, and saw dodol.
