Mirissa Whale Watching Day Tour

Mirissa Whale Watching Day Tour

“Home Is Where The Anchor Drops”

The Blue Whale is the biggest and loudest animal in the world. The IUCN Red List counts the blue whale as “endangered”. It is estimated that there are about 8,000‑14,000 blue whales worldwide. The down south coastal town of Mirissa is considered to be one of the world's great whale‐watching locations.

One of the reasons that many people prefer whale‐watching in Mirissa to any of the alternatives is the variety of other marine species they have the chance to spot in the area. Animal species that live in this part are Sperm Whales, Sei Whales, Orcas (killer whales), Fin Whales, Dolphins, Turtles, Whale Sharks, Manta Rays and Flying Fish. Depending on the weather conditions, most of the species among the list can be seen during a whale‐watching excursion.

Basically, we organize your tour in a shared boat (a large boat includes all the facilities), but your boat usually carries a lower number of passengers per trip in order to give an equal‐seeing opportunity to everyone and ensure safety. If you want a personalized excursion, we can arrange a private boat which accommodates only your group.

All the tours will be carried out in a responsible and sustainable manner as per the international guidelines.

Tour Itinerary

In the morning, your guide will meet you at your preferred start location and take you to the Mirissa Fisheries Harbour. We should be present at the place around 6.15 a.m. Then you sail to the deep Indian Ocean. Boat staff will serve your breakfast and other refreshments on the boat. Generally, the duration of the journey will be around 4 hours. But occasionally, tours extend up to 6‑7 hours if spotting whales is hard on that particular day.

After you come back to shore, you can do the following optional activities as your next part of this day trip. You can select any of them based on your desire.

Optional Activities On Request: Galle Dutch Fort Museum, Martin Wickramasinghe Folk Museum

At the end of the tour, we'll drop you at the location where we picked you up in the morning or any other location you request.

FAQs
Between November to April.
This tour is suited for anyone (except pregnant mothers).
No age restrictions.
Wear light clothes and better to take sunscreen and sunglass if possible. Chill mornings can be expected during the December and January months, bring suitable clothes if necessary. It is recommended to bring a pair of binoculars if you have one.
Keep in your mind that you are going to do nature‐related activity, so spotting of whales is not 100% guaranteed. But our suppliers do their best to show whales somehow. So you have a 95% chance of seeing these ocean creatures. However, the trip itself to the deep Indian Ocean is completely worth your time.
Sometimes, boat rides can be choppy and those who get sea sick should take precautions prior to boarding the boat. Boat crew will provide sea sick tablets if necessary.
