About Adam's Peak (Sri Padaya)

Adam's Peak, also known as Sri Padaya, is a revered pilgrimage site, particularly for Buddhists. Believers hold that the summit's footprint is that of Lord Buddha, attracting thousands of Buddhist pilgrims from all around the globe each year. Adam's Peak is one of the 16 sacred sites in Sri Lanka, which has a rich history that dates back centuries, with multiple legends, and spiritual and cultural beliefs associated with its sacred status. The peak is also referred to as Sivanadi, Padam, Samanala Kanda, and Sri Padaya. This holy site is situated at an elevation of 7,360 feet above sea level, it offers awe‐inspiring views.

The pilgrimage season extends from December to May, drawing tourists who come not only for its spiritual significance but also for the breathtaking vistas, particularly the stunning sunrise from the mountain top. The area surrounding Adam's Peak is a sanctuary, part of the Horton Plains National Park and mountain wilderness. Pilgrims or anyone visiting this holy site must ascend approximately 5,200 steps, with numerous rest stops along the way. On the trek, one encounters spectacular waterfalls, tea plantations, streams, and archaeological sites.

There are two main routes to reach Sri Pada. One is via the railway or main road to Hatton, and the other is via the Ratnapura‐Kuruvita road. The most popular and the easiest route is the first one. Pilgrims typically travel up to Nallatanni by vehicle where the trek begins. Your journey begins at the Makara Thorana, after which you have to do a 4‐mile walk through rugged mountainous terrain and tea estates. The climb is physically demanding, but the picturesque views of the surrounding landscape and the sense of accomplishment make it all worthwhile.

As a tradition, pilgrims bathe at “Seetha Gangula” before starting their journey to the summit. Stone stairways make the climb more manageable, although some sections are quite rugged and challenging. “Idikatupana” is the next significant stop where pilgrims customarily thread a needle. Other resting points include “Gettampana” and “Heramitipana”, with the most difficult ascent being at Mahagiridambaya. At the summit, pilgrims find a shrine and the sacred footprint of Lord Buddha. After venerating the footprint, pilgrims ring the belfry according to the number of their visits. The surrounding region is dotted with ancient temples, shrines, and monasteries, each holding stories of devotion and faith that have been passed down through generations.

If you are considering embarking on the pilgrimage to Adam's Peak, it is essential to plan ahead and be prepared for the challenges that lie ahead. Make sure to pack appropriate clothing, footwear, and supplies for the trek, and be mindful of the weather conditions during your visit. Additionally, show respect for the religious customs and traditions observed by the local community, as you partake in this sacred experience.
